a short update

Well Hello again,
There really hasn't been much to update as of late. Most of our time has been spent praying, sleeping, rock climbing and cleaning. It has been a time of preparation. On Friday our first set of students step off the plane from all over the world (USA, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Norway) to impact and change a generation of travelers that are searching for something or someone to fulfill them. They are setting aside five months to dive into their Creator and we are here to love and disciple them. I am so excited! I am so thankful for this opportunity, but as each day goes on I am more and more ruined. Ruined of living a life that is without adventure, community, and Jesus. What will my life look like after this school? Only God knows. I am dedicated to seeing Him glorified in my life, wherever that may be.
If you could, we would love your prayers for the students getting here safely and without a hitch. Openness. Unity. Also, because none of us can do this without money, finances.

Welcome to our team...

Well, there we all are! This is the team I have the wonderful privilege to work with the next five months! Today I have just been praising the Lord for the opportunity to work with this staff. Our leader is amazing! The team unity so far is strong. I am so thankful, oh man, I can't get over how excited I am!

that's cheeky...

It has been a week and a half of training and we are due for some more next week. Oxford is cold. We might go to Castle Hill today, but snow is in the forecast.
It has been fun to get to know each other and see our team bond.
Our students start to arrive in a week and a half and we are so pumped!

digging

So here is a neat story. The other morning the base all got together for prayer. The girl leading it, Ali, tells us the snowboarders school needs $13,000NZD (~$9,400USD) to go on outreach, which they were leaving for in 2-3 days. I'm thinking, well that's a load of money, where is that going to come from in 2 days? So then Ali challenges us and says that she believes all of the money was in this room, the room we were all sitting in together. We are all living off the support of others, but that we can still provide. We don't need to look outside (back to the States or Canada or wherever).
Boom baby, the snowboarders school somehow got over the amount they needed from our backpackers staff, a few base staff that were in the room, and some random others. How? How did that happen? In 15 minutes, they got every penny and more? This is why I believe. It is one reason of many, but I believe in a God that provides. Amazing.

Next story. Yesterday, eleven of us headed to Christchurch to do whatever we could to help with the cleanup of Christchurch. The fellas were so pumped to get there hands dirty and put there huge muscles to work. We girls were excited too, we just don't have huge muscles.
Here is what I can describe of the disaster. Many subdivisions were somehow allowed to be built on sand/silt. Everyone knows the phrase about not building a house on sand, welcome to Christchurch. The odd thing about this is most of these houses are the upper class. In many of my studies in college we learned about the poor being the ones targeted for this kind of thing. Mainly because if something did go wrong they can't do much about it (watch Erin Brockovich).
We saw houses barried under a foot of sand, and we spent yesterday digging them out. I'm pretty sure sewage pipes were damaged (I only know that from the horrible smell). Water was out. These houses are ruined. A house is not livable when part of there foundation goes up and the other down and is cracked in half. What are these people supposed to do? The economy sucks and now they have to somehow deal with this.
Natural phenomenon's (Earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, etc.) take what men build and play with it like a toy. I learned you should never feel untouchable and safe. Tomorrow there could be a 30 second long Earthquake that can tear your life into crazy. Still, we can be thankful that no one died.

That is enough for now, time for some tea and breakfast.

“Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.”

The title is a quote from Buddha. He speaks true words there.
It is still strange for me to be here. I didn't think I was coming back, yet here I am. I am sleeping on a bunk and walking to the store to get Tim Tams. I can not believe it. I am here when a huge earthquake shakes the South Island. I am calling my parents on skype. While it is strange, it is also home. Most of our team is here, except for one.
Here is a thought on this fine, chilly morning.
I am reading from Psalm 4:6
It says: Many are asking, "Who can show us any good?" Let the light of your face shine upon us, O Lord.
It gives me a picture of the moon. The moon gives us light in the darkness because the sun shines upon it. I want to be like the moon. I want to reflect God's goodness to those around me. Whether I show this with hard work and dedication, or being kind when I could be horrid. This is my biggest prayer in life. Whether I am in Tulsa serving coffee or here in New Zealand backpacking. Time is too short to waste not showing others how He has changed us and shown us love. We are to pass it on, so let's.

just a funny video showing NZ's personality

this is the video you see before the plane takes off in New Zealand. It is only for their domestic flights. the All Blacks are New Zealand's rugby team and they love them.

New Zealand is rocking us...already

Well, I have been here two-ish days and we are already getting rocked.

We were hit by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake last night. That was the magnitude that hit Haiti, luckily, there are mostly sheep in New Zealand. I'm sure they were flying around. The shaking was unbelievable! It was a first for me and most of us. The base is fine and we are all alive. Praise the Lord! Christchurch, the second biggest city got the most damage.
The epicenter was 8 miles east of us...
Here is a NZ newspaper article.
